Happy Mothers Day Wilders!

Today is a day to give thanks to the woman who gave you life and if you are a mom today is the day you shouldn’t have to do a damn thing cause lord knows tomorrow you will have to do EVERYTHING!

My mom is an amazing woman. A selfless, single mom who gave me everything I needed to grow up as a functional adult. I grew up crafting and creating as a way of life and it has always stuck with me. As a young child my mother worked managing the front desk of a small local hotel and every day after school when I got off the bus at the hotel I would walk in to find a new project set up and waiting.

I can only imagine at the time and effort it took her to set this up every day. And, the projects were never the same. I wish I had pictures from that time period but, I can tell you this, the woman came up with some pretty creative ways to make construction paper, paper plates, glitter, glue and popsicle sticks into an all afternoon entertainment for me. Christmas ornaments from clothes pins, sun catchers from melted crayon and wax paper, the projects were endless and I have no doubt that to this day they are all stored in a box somewhere like so much buried treasure.

The habits we learn in our youth carry significant weight in who we will be as adults and I am very certain that this daily habit of creating something new every day has a lot to do with my creative nature as an adult and even on my busiest days I try to create at least one thing. Some days the only thing I create is messes and others the only thing I manage is cocktails but hey, pahtato potatoe. Creating is creating!

I am not a mom myself but growing up with a single mom and seeing what she went through and what she gave up to raise me the way she did gives me a pretty good insight into a little of what it takes to be a mom and what it takes to instill good values, good habits and good practices.

With that in mind I give you a mini round-up of kid friendly projects using recycled or upcycled materials to do with your youngins :) the family that creates together stays together. I know we all have busy lives but trust me when I say if you can find time even just once a week to make art or create with your children you really will be making the world a more beautiful place. Just a few ideas to get you started!

Happy Mothers Day and Happy Crafting! Now I leave you with the only current picture I could find of me and my amazing mom! It was taken while sitting on a cliff, over tidal pools in San Pedro, on my moms last visit to California.
